American historian.
Biographical Note: William Hand Browne was an author and English professor, The Johns Hopkins University.
He was born in Baltimore, Md. Dec. 31, 1828. He received the M.D. degree, University of Maryland in 1850. He chose a career in commerce which he left at the beginning of the Civil War to concentrate on academic and literary interests. Between 1879 and 1891, Browne served as librarian at Hopkins and assisted with English instruction. He continued as professor of English Literature until his retirement in 1910. Browne wrote journal articles and book reviews and was editor of the "Maryland Historical Magazine," 1906-1911. He edited the first thirteen volumes of the colonial archives for Maryland. Browne also wrote poetry, and his editorial advice was sought by other poets and writers of his day. William Hand Browne died in 1912.
