Biographical History

Teiji Itō, 1935-1982, was a Tokyo-born composer who resided in New York City. His compositional style reflects Japanese, African, American Indian, and American influences. A percussion performer, he was particularly interested in the use of percussion instruments in various cultures. Itō composed music for some of the experimental films of his first wife Maya Deren, who died in 1961. Much of his dance and theater music was composed for productions by the Open Eye Company (theatrical troupe) and at the Theater of the Open Eye in New York City.

From the guide to the Teiji Itō collection, ca. 1950-1982, (The New York Public Library. Music Division.)
