Physicist and astronomer.
Joseph W. Chamberlain was born in Boonville, Missouri on August 24, 1928. He attended the University of Missouri from 1945-1949 where he received his A.B. and A.M. in physics. He then went on to the University of Michigan and gained his M.S. and Ph. D. in Astronomy in 1952. Soon afterward, he became a professor at the University of Chicago from 1955-1962. Dr. Chamberlain worked as the Associate Director for the Planetary Sciences (Space Division) and an astronomer at the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Tucson, Arizona from 1962-1971. He moved to Houston, Texas to be Director at the NASA Lunar Science Institute and also an adjunct professor at Rice University. In 1976, he became full Professor of Rice University where he retired as Professor Emeritus in 1992. After retiring, he returned to Tucson, Arizona where he died at the age of 75 on April 14, 2004. Dr. Chamberlain was a member of many committees of the scientific community. He also sat as Chairman for institutions such as the Division for Planetary Sciences and the Geophysics Section of the National Academy of Sciences. He published many articles on physics and astronomy in well named scientific journals. In the 1970’s, was one of the first scientists who noticed changes in the ozone layer and warn about the effects of what is now called global warming.
