Biographical History
Anthropologist. Research Fellow and Project Manager (1987) of the AIAS study of the social impact of uranium mining on the Aborigines of the Northern Territory, 1978-1984.
The papers relate to the Social Impact of Uranium Mining Project (SIUMP) initially proposed in 1977 and established in 1979 under the auspices of the Australian Institute for Aboriginal Studies, with John von Sturmer as Project Director and Sue Kesteven as Research Fellow. The Project was concerned with the social impact of uranium mining on the indigenous population in the Northern Territory, in particular the people of the Alligator Rivers Region affected by mining at Nabarlek and Ranger, with research work carried out mainly at Oenpelli. The final project report was published in 1984 as Aborigines and Uranium: Consolidated report to the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs on the social impact of uranium mining on the Aborigines of the Northern Territory.
