Biographical History

Frederick Weyerhaeuser, a German immigrant, began his career in the lumber business at Rock Island, Illinois, in 1858. He came to St. Paul in 1891, from where he directed a business empire that eventually stretched to the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

The history of the many Weyerhaeuser companies, and of the many Weyerhaeusers who participated in these companies, is too complex to be adequately dealt with in a short sketch. Researchers are referred to the book Timber and Men: The Weyerhaeuser Story, by Ralph W. Hidy, Frank Ernest Hill, and Allan Nevins (New York, 1963). This work includes an index and several appendices listing associated companies' officers.

Within the Weyerhaeuser Family Papers are various historical sketches of individual companies, which are noted in the Detailed Description and in a folder list prepared by the Forest History Society that is included in the collection.

For biographical information, see Timber and Men, especially chapters 1 and 17, biographical materials in the papers, and Fortune magazine's articles about the Weyerhaeuser companies and family (April 1934). The latter includes a chart illustrating the major Weyerhaeuser family business interests.
