Biographical History

Joseph Newton Pew, Sr. (1848-1912) was the founder of the Sun Oil Company and its predecessor natural gas and pipeline companies. J.N. Pew was initially involved in a series of ventures in the oil boomtown of Titusville, Pa. Pew and Edward O. Emerson formed a partnership to speculate in oil leases and to explore the area's natural gas fields. Emerson and Pew founded the Keystone Gas Company in 1881 and the Penn Fuel Company the next year. Following the success of these two companies they orgainzed the Sun Oil Line Company of Ohio in 1888 to transport, store and distribute crude oil. Two years later they formed the Sun Oil Company (Ohio) after which Pew began to buy out Emerson's interests in their joint ventures. During the 1890s Pew began to transform Sun into a fully integrated oil company. During these years he began to groom his sons and nephews to take over the business.
