Emily Stevenson McDonald Carlisle was born 6 September 1886 to Francis McDonald and Rozella Stevenson in Big Cottonwood (now Holladay) Utah. She married Harvey Cartwright Carlisle on 19 July 1923 and had two children from her marriage. She taught in Granite District, Utah beginning in 1907 and continued into the late forties and early fifties. She served the community and state in many capacities, including time in the Utah State Legislature and playing an active role with Daughter of Utah Pioneers. Emily died on 24 January 1975.
Emily Stevenson McDonald Carlisle was born September 6, 1886, to Francis McDonald and Rozella Stevenson in Big Cottonwood (now Holladay), Utah. She was the oldest of eleven children. In 1907, she graduated from University of Utah Normal School and received her Master's degree from the University of Utah in 1916. During the summers of 1918 and 1923, Emily interned at Columbia University. Her education continued throughout all her life as she took summer sessions at University of California and University of Utah. In 1952, she received her MS from the University of Utah.
Emily married Harvey Cartwright Carlisle on 19 July 1923. She would have two children in this marriage: Isabelle and Frank McDonald Carlisle. Harvey had children from his other marriages who came to accept Emily as their mother. Harvey died 3 July 1935, leaving Emily a widow. She never remarried.
Beginning in 1907, Emily began teaching in Granite District, Utah. From 1916-1923, she was the head of the English Department at Granite High School. In 1935, Emily began teaching at Cyprus Junior and Senior High School. During this time, she was an advisor of the yearbook which won many national awards.
In addition to Carlisle's accomplishments as a teacher, she was very active in church service, social service, and politics. She served as Director of Cottonwood Stake Maternity Hospital, 1926-1931; first President of the Granite PTA Council, 1924-1925; President of Twin Peaks Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers, 1956-1958; Member of Eighteenth Session of the State Legislature, 1935-1936 and 1947-1948; President of Utah Council of Teachers of English; and many other things.
During the last years of her life, Emily lived with her children Frank, in New York, and then with Isabelle Carlisle Packard, in California. Emily died in San Luis Obispo, California on January 24, 1975.

She died 18 July 2000 in San Luis Obispo, California. Based on the correspondence in the collection, Isabelle spent time abroad, as letters to her mother and brother are from various states and European countries in the early 1950s.
Frank McDonald Carlisle was born 12 March 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Harvey Cartwright Carlisle and Emily Stevenson McDonald. He died 27 June 1987 in New York. From the correspondence it seems that he worked as a teacher.
