Biographical History
German-born mathematician and civil engineer educated at the Technische Hochschule Berlin and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Reissner became an American citizen in 1945, served on the faculty at MIT from 1938-1969 and in the Engineering School at UCSD from 1970-1979, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Reissner specialized in problems of turbulence and wing aerodynamics in the early part of his career and, later, in problems of elasticity of beams, plates, and shells. In 1961, he co-authored with William Martin a book entitled Elementary differential equations. In 1996, a selection of Reissner's articles was published under the title Selected works in applied mechanics and mathematics. Reissner died in 1996.
