Biographical History

Prominent Philadelphia physician Dr. Benjamin Rush (1746-1813) was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, a Continental Congressman, and Surgeon General of the Continental Army. He served on the staff of the Pennsylvania Hospital and was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Today he is best known for his controversial views on yellow fever and his pioneering work in the field of psychiatry. Rush married Princeton, New Jersey, native Julia Stockton (1759-1848) in 1776. Their children include physician John Rush (1777-1837); U.S. Attorney General Richard Rush (1780-1859); physician James Rush (1786-1869); merchant Benjamin Rush, Jr. (1791-1824); lawyer and poet Samuel Rush (1795-1859); and physician and abolitionist William Rush (1801-1864).
