Epithet: Major-General; of Add MS 48837
Commissioned by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Composed 1953. First performance Toronto, October 1953, CBC Studio Orchestra, John Adaskin conductor. Revised (re-scored) 1955. First performance of revised version Montreal, 1956, Canadian League of Composers, Jean-Marie Beaudet conductor. This work is a set of variations on a slow reflective theme for solo clarinet. The rapid changes of mood and tempo from one variation to another explain the title.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
