William R. Dunn was born in 1916, soloed in a biplane at age 14 and was a cowboy for three years before joining the U. S. Army at age of 17. He was discharged in 1936 and in 1939 he joined the Canadian Army, which was the beginning of a 38 year military career. In 1940 he was transferred to the Royal Air Force where he became possibly the first American Ace of World War II. In addition to participating in the D-Day invasion, the Battle of France, and the Burma-China incursion, Dunn also flew in Vietnam. He retired in 1973 from the Air Force Defense Command Headquarters. In his retirement, he wrote many magazine articles and authored several books including his autobiography, "Fighter Pilot: The First American Ace of World War II." Interested in native American history, Dunn also wrote "War Drum Echoes: A Narrative History of the Indian Wars in Colorado," and "I stand by Sand Creek: A Defense of Colonel John M. Chivington and the Third Colorado Cavalry." Retired Lieutenant Colonel William R. Dunn died in Colorado Springs, Colorado in 1995.
