U.S. senator and statesman.
Thomas Benton held the office of state superintendent of public instruction (1847); served in Iowa's First General Assembly; was appointed colonel of the 29th Iowa Infantry during the Civil War; and was appointed assessor of internal revenue by President Johnson in 1866.
