Author L.A.G. Strong was born in Plymouth, England, to parents of Irish heritage, and earned scholarships to Oxford. He taught for a time, returning to Oxford to finish his degree, and returned to teaching at the Summer Fields School at Oxford. His first novel and book of stories sold well, and he became a full-time writer, producing novels, verse, biographies, literary criticism, and mysteries. A prolific writer, his work was popular but received mixed reviews, possibly due to the quantity and diversity of his writing. He also worked as director of the Methuen and Company publishing house, and was elected to the Irish Academy of Letters.
