John Rauch was an industrial dyer. Over a twelve year period he worked in manufactories in Switzerland, France, Germany, and America. He invented a substitute for woad, a European herb of the mustard family grown for the blue dyestuff yielded by its leaves.

From the description of Receipts on dying, 1815-1817. (Winterthur Library). WorldCat record id: 122601677
