Biographical History

The recipient of this letter, Henry Morfit, acted as President Andrew Jackson's agent in Texas and reported favorably on the state. However, both Morfit and Jackson agreed that any recognition of Texas' independence should be delayed, and this became U.S. policy. In this letter, Morfit's close friend William Gatewood compliments Morfit's work in Texas: "I have read with much pleasure your valuable correspondence in relation to Texas which has made a very favourable impression respecting the chances which are afforded to an active and enterprising man...."
