Missionary, colonial governor of Martha's Vineyard.

Having received a grant to the island, Mayhew emigrated there in 1641 with his son, Thomas Mayhew. Together they organized a mission to convert the Indians, which the elder Mayhew carried on following the death of his son in 1657. Mannitootan or Christiantown, was started in 1659 when the sachem Josias of Takemmy granted the praying men (Christian Indians) of his sachemship one square mile for their exclusive use. When a decade later Josias began selling this land, Mayhew intervened and reached an agreement whereby the land was preserved for the Indians and the town government was placed under his control.

From the description of The 9th day of January 1670 agreed by my self and Kochanomin that the town of Mannitootan in Takemmy shall remain for ever in the possession of the praying men : [Martha's Vineyard, Mass.], [between 1694 and 1710]. (Newberry Library). WorldCat record id: 38879009
