Biographical History
Alberta Henry was born in Hosston, Louisiana and was raised in Topeka, Kansas. She moved to Salt Lake City in 1949, married Harold Henry in 1950. In 1965, she founded the Alberta Henry Education Foundation, which provides college scholarships to underprivileged students. She was a teacher's aide at the first Head Start Center in Salt Lake City and later became the parent coordinator. In 1972 she became a minority consultant for the Salt Lake County School District. She received an honorary doctorate from the University of Utah in 1971 and a B.S. in Elementary Education in 1980. She was the President of the Salt Lake City NAACP from 1980 to 1992 and has been involved in numerous community and government organizations, including the Altrusa Club, Utah Commission on Civil Rights, and the Governor's Black Advisory Council.
Henry moved to Utah in about 1949 for health reasons and stayed. She received an honorary degree from the University of Utah in 1971 and a bachelors degree in 1980 at age 59. She headed the NAACP in Utah for many years and was the first black administrator for the Salt Lake School District.
