Biographical History

The Institute for Emerging Issues is a "think and do" tank affiliated with North Carolina State University. The Institute is a catalyst for innovative public policy through its research, ideas, debate and action that encourages civic leadership in business, government and higher education.

What We Do

Identify Emerging Trends

To position North Carolina for success in today’s competitive markets, the Institute convenes the best minds in business, government, academia, and non-profits. These working groups forecast which trends will have the greatest impact on our region and anticipate how those trends will shape public and private sector policy.

Sharpen Public Debate

To deepen public understanding of emerging trends and their impact on North Carolina, the Institute organizes public forums, conferences, and roundtables. Over the past eighteen years the annual Emerging Issues Forum has developed into North Carolina's leading public policy event. Distinguished national and international speakers provide a global perspective that challenges North Carolinians to shape their common future.

Propose Strategic Responses

To transform debate into strategies, the Institute synthesizes the best ideas generated by its working groups and public forums. We publish reports, policy briefs, and trends analyses that highlight guiding principles and propose innovative approaches to economic and social issues.

Engage the Public and Private Sector

To move ideas into action, the Institute creates ad hoc independent advisory groups of public and private leaders who candidly explore competing strategies. In addition, we organize informal events that provide access and build trust among stakeholders, while regularly communicating with opinion leaders to draw out their ideas and to share and test ours.
