Smith was the head of Smith Elder & Co., the publishing company to which Brooks sent his manuscript.
Reginald John Smith was born on 30 May 1857 at Brighton. He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge. After graduating with a classics and law degree, he served as a barrister from 1888 until 1894 when he was appointed Queen's Counsel. In 1893 he married Isabel Marion Smith, youngest daughter of George Murray Smith, whose publishing firm of Smith, Elder & Co. he joined in 1894. In 1898, he was appointed editor of the Cornhill Magazine and a year later assumed sole control of Smith, Elder & Co. Between 1904 and 1904 and again in 1916, he served as president of the Publishers' Association. He died on 26 December 1916 in London.
