Biographical History

The Grolier Club was established on 1884 January 23 by a group of seven New York City book collectors with the object, as stated its constitution, "of literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books." It mounts three public exhibitions each year, publishes catalogs and other materials, and sponsors some lectures on the book arts. The government and management of the Club are entrusted to the committee known as the Council, consisting of 21 members who act also as Trustees of the Club. The Club employs an executive director and currently has seven standing committees that report to the Council. The Program Committees are: Library (1887-); Modern Fine Printing (1971-); Public Exhibitions (known until 1972 as the Committee on Arrangements; 1886-), and Special Functions (1950-). The Support Committees are: Admissions (1970-); Finance (1963-), and House (1884-). The President of the Club appoints the Chairs, and they report to the Council. From time to time ad hoc committees and sub-committees are appointed.
