Biographical History

Governor Oliver P. Morton was Indiana's governor during the Civil War. Throughout the war he mobilized the war effort in Indiana. In order to maintain massive armies during the Civil War a national draft was instituted. Uprisings in Evansville, Indiana protesting the draft were the strongest in the state during that time. After the war Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy, was indicted for treason. In December 1868 he was included in the general amnesty of the South.
