Biographical History
James M. Hare, Michigan's Secretary of State from 1954-1970, was born July 31, 1910 at Racine, Wis. He moved to Detroit as a child. He received a B.A. from Wayne State University and a M.A. from the University of Michigan. He was a teacher, served on the Detroit Board of Education, and was Secretary-Manager of the Michigan State Fair. A Democrat, he was elected Secretary of State in 1954 through 1966. His accomplishments in office include the "firm but fair" driver license policy, support of freedom of information and consumer protection legislation, and installing technical, tax-saving devices to expedite processing of titles and licenses. He retired from public service in 1970, and died in Venice, Fla. on March 11, 1980.
