Biographical History
Lloyd Hurst Swindell was born 1890 March 1, presumably in North Carolina. He graduated from the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1911 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Textile Industry. The college's alumni directories indicate that Swindell was a microscopist with the state board of health (1911-1912), an employee of Southern Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company in Raleigh (1912-1914), and an employee of the Pedigreed Seed Company in Hartsville, South Carolina (1914-1915). Between 1915 and 1927, the alumni directory lists Swindell's occupation as a Raleigh farmer. Evidence from this collection suggests he continued farming in the area through the 1930s, growing corn and cotton. Swindell died on 1985 August 4 in Raleigh; he was survived by his wife Elizabeth Caldwell Swindell, who died in Raleigh on 1995 April 5. A native of Texas, Elizabeth was born 1905 October 24. She spent her childhood in Yazoo City, Mississippi, and attended Belhaven College in Jackson, Mississippi. She completed graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Duke University, and the University of Wisconsin before teaching at Belhaven and at Peace College in Raleigh.
