Jenks was a wholesaler from Salem, Mass.
John Jenks was a merchant in Salem, Essex County, Ma. Born in Medford, Ma. on Dec. 6, 1751, he was the son of John and Rebecca Jenks. His father died when he was young, so Jenks was raised by Cotton Tufts, a merchant in Weymouth. He moved to Salem and joined his brother, Daniel, in the dry-goods business. Jenks and his family resided on Essex St., and he had a shop there. He was a major importer of goods from England. Jenks was active in Rev. Dr. Hopkins' Society and contributed to building the local meeting house; he was a freemason. Jenks married three times to Hannah Andrews, Martha Abbot, and Annis Pulling. He died at the age of 66 on Oct. 11, 1817.
