Biographical History

The records in this group are those of Frank Porter Graham as President of the University of North Carolina. They date from 1 July 1930, when Graham succeeded Harry W. Chase, to 14 November 1932, when he became President of the newly created Consolidated University of North Carolina, which included the University of North Carolina (in Chapel Hill), North Carolina State College (in Raleigh), and Woman's College (in Greensboro).

With consolidation, the title of the chief administrative officer of the Chapel Hill campus became Dean of Administration (in 1945 it changed to Chancellor). After Graham's selection as Consolidated University President, the Board of Trustees was slow to fill his former campus position. Indeed, until 2 July 1934, when Robert B. House was named Dean of Administration, Frank Graham served as President of both the Chapel Hill campus and the Consolidated University system.

The files of Graham's predecessors as campus President are part of a record group held by the University Archives and titled University of North Carolina Papers; it includes most of the extant records of the University from its founding to 1930. The records of the Chapel Hill campus administrative heads following Graham are organized as the Records of the Office of the Chancellor in the University Archives.
