Biographical History
New York City carpenter and master builder responsible for the construction of houses for prominent residents of colonial New York and New Jersey.
John Edward Pryor, English born carpenter and master builder. He arrived from England in 1761, and a year later was engaged to build the Proprietary House in Perth Amboy, N.J. The Proprietors of East Jersey commissioned the impressive mansion hoping to convince the colonial governor to choose the house and Perth Amboy as his official residence. The house was finished in 1764. Pryor later built houses for prominent citizens of New York and New Jersey. He died ca. 1768. The Proprietary House later served as the residence of William Franklin, the last governor of New Jersey and as Howe's headquarters during the British occupation in 1776. In 1976 the building was taken over by the state of New Jersey and is maintained by the Proprietary House Association.
