Biographical History

In 1883, Sam Webb (I) (1855-1927) moved to Albany and set up a Real Estate and Insurance business with his father, General William Graham Webb (I) (1824-1902). It was called Webb and Webb. When William Graham Webb (I) died, Sam Webb (I) partnered with L.H. Hill to become Webb and Hill. Early on (and evident in some of the records in this collection) the business became Webb, Campbell and Hill and offered legal services as Sam Webb and Campbell were lawyers. The business was involved in real estate, insurance, and to a lesser extent, cattle sales. Shortly after Campbell entered, he left and the business reverted to Webb and Hill. Over the years the name changed many more times and Sam Webb (I) eventually got out of the business altogether. Later, his son, William Graham Webb (1879-1961) in partnership with his own sons William Graham Jr. (1904-1977), and Sam Richard (1913- )founded a new Real Estate and Insurance firm in 1932. The business' name once again returned to Webb and Webb.
