William W. Shorthill lived in various areas of Alaska during the Klondike gold rush and early mining days of Treadwell, Douglas, and Juneau. He worked as Secretary to Alaska Governors Riggs and Strong.
William Werner Shorthill was born October 6, 1870 in Rockford Illinois to Thomas Andrew Shorthill and Sarah Elizabeth Werner. He operated the Olympic News Company in Dyea, Alaska, on Main Street in Dyea Alaska and was Secretary of the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Skagway; he also served as Secretary to Alaska Governor's Walter E. Clark (1909-1913) and John F.A. Strong (1913-1918). Shorthill died on July 26, 1948.
