Gustavus Woodson Smith (1822-1896), civil and military engineer and Confederate Major General, born in Kentucky.

Army officer and engineer. Appointed major-general in the provisional Confederate Army in September 1861 and held various commands off and on until the end of the war, including several days as acting secretary of war.
