Biographical History
Courses in home economics first appeared on the UC Davis campus in 1936 and culminated in the creation of the Department of Home Economics in 1946. The department became an independent unit, with the establishment of its own chair, in 1953. Topics covered in courses offered by the department included child development, dietetics, foods, nutrition, design, and textile science. Before the 1955-56 academic year, the department was disbanded with faculty going to Consumer Sciences (which later became part of the Division of Textiles and Clothing), Nutrition, and Applied Behavioral Sciences (now Human and Community Development).
