Biographical History
Educated at University College London and St. John's College Cambridge. B.A. 1859 as 6th Wrangler and 2nd Smith's prizeman. Fellow of St. Johns. Appointed Professor of natural philosophy in Owens College Manchester 1860 and Professor of experimental philosophy, University of Oxford, 1865-1915. President of Physical Society, 1882-1884.
