Biographical History

Catherine Pierce Hiller, newspaper publisher and flight instructor, was born in Waltham, Mass., attended the Waltham School for Girls and Bishop Hopkins Hall, edited and published the Barre (Mass.) Gazette until 1949, when she decided to pursue her interest in flying. She and her husband, Frederick Hiller, had founded the Barre Hiller Airport in 1948. A charter pilot, she was one of few women in the U.S. to have a glider license; she also qualified as an instructor in gliders and seaplanes. Hiller owned and managed the airport, served as governor of the "Ninety-Nines", a woman pilots' association, and was president of the Massachusetts Aviation Trades.
