Biographical History

Mrs. Videau Marion Singleton Deveaux Converse of Stateburg, S.C., was sister of Sarah Angelica Singleton Van Buren; Deveaux controlled plantations known as The Ruins and True Blue in Sumter County, S.C.; in 1835 married Robert Marion DeVeaux (1812-1843), a union that produced at least four children; in 1849, this wealthy widow married her Episcopal minister, Rev. Augustus Lawrence Converse (1798-1860), an abusive relationship from which the courts refused to grant her a divorce. Following Converse's death, Mrs. Deveaux dropped his name and resumed use of the name of her first husband. Name sometimes cited as Marion Videau Deveaux.
