Biographical History
153rd New York Volunteer Infantry. Regiment raised in the northern counties of New York State, ordered to Alexandria and did provost service at Washington, D.C.; in Feb. 1864, transferred to Louisiana, and attached to the Nineteenth Corps, sailed from New Orleans in July to the defense of Washington, then menaced by General Jubal Early's invasion; joined in the pursuit of Early across the Potomac, penetrating into the Shenandoah Valley, soon afterward engaged in the Battle of Winchester, the Battle of Fisher's Hill, and in pursuit of the defeated Confederates; in June 1865, it was ordered to Savannah, where it did provost duty until its discharge from service in Oct. 1865.
George Swarts. 22 years old, enlisted on Aug. 29, 1862, at Minden, N.Y. as a private; on Sept. 9, 1862, he mustered into Company E, 153rd New York Infantry and was discharged on May 22, 1865, at Washington, D.C. (from Lincoln Hospital); wounded Oct. 19, 1864, Cedar Creek, Va.; promotions: corporal October 18, 1862, sergeant.
James Stone. 24 years old, enlisted on Aug. 20, 1861, at Albany, N.Y. as a private; on Aug. 25, 1861, he mustered into Company A, 43rd New York Infantry; re-enlisted on Dec. 24, 1863, mustered out on June 27, 1865 at Washington, D.C.; promotions: musician, intra-regimental company transfers: Sept. 1, 1861, from Company A to Company E.
