Biographical History

The Virginia George Washington Bicentennial Commission was created bythe General Assembly in 1926. The purpose of the commission was to represent the state planning, coordinating and carrying out a program of celebration throughout the year 1932 for the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of George Washington. In 1930, the General Assembly amended the act by increasing the membership of the commission from six to eleven members included the Speaker of the House of Delegates, who appointed three members, the President of the Senate, who also appointed three members, and the clerk of the House of Delegates. The commission ceased existence on December 31, 1932 and a final report was submitted to the General Assemblyin January 1934.
