Biographical History

John Clay was born in Scotland in 1851, moved to Canada around 1877 and to Chicago in 1882. He became a U.S. citizen and owned ranches in Wyoming and other areas. He ran the largest livestock commission firm in the U.S. and controlled almost 24 banks. Clay, one of America's leading ranch managers and founder of businesses dealing with agriculture and livestock, died in 1934.
