Biographical History

The first French republic was at war with the European coalition and needed money for the growing military expenses. Joseph Cambon, general comptroller of finances, was conducting periodic reviews of the assets, one main source being the riches seized from the royal family and the nobility after the fall of the monarchy in 1792, and from the churches thereafter.

From the description of Etat des diamants, pierres précieuses & autres objets faisant partie de la Richesse Nationale, qui nous ont été représentés & dont nous présentons la notice au Représentant du Peuple Cambon, comme pouvant être employés sans être dénaturés, dans la mission qui nous est confiée par l'arrêté du Comité de Salut Public du 6e Floréal l'an 2eme, 1794 May 7.
