Biographical History
With a restructuring of the Office of the Academic Dean, the Office of Academic Affairs was created in 1991. Until that time, the person carrying the title "Academic Dean" also had the title "Vice president for Academic Affairs." In 1991, these titles were separated into two positions with Sr. Austin Doherty continuing as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Sr. Kathleen O'Brien as Academic Dean. An over-arching department was created, the "Office of Academic Affairs." In 1999, Sr. Kathleen O'Brien became Vice President of Academic Affairs and the "Academic Dean" position became two "Associate Dean" positions held by Zohreh Emami and Timothy Riordan. Since the office was restructured in 1991, Alverno has experienced growth in its physical plant with the opening of the Teaching, Learning and Technology Center in January 1999; growth in its curriculum with the creation of the first Masters Program--a Master of Arts for teachers/trainers in 1996 and the creation of three new majors: Community Leadership and Development in 1996, Communication, Management and Technology (CMT) in 1998, and Environmental Science also in 1998; and growth in esteem as the recipient of the prestigious Hesburgh Award for faculty development to enhance undergraduate teaching in 1994.
