Biographical History

Thomas J. Maney, a native of New York, earned his B.S. (1912) in Horticulture from Iowa State College (University). Upon graduation, he started teaching at Iowa State as Professor (1912-1945) of Pomology and Head of the Pomology Sub-Section of the Agricultural Experiment Station (1940-1945). Maney was nationally recognized for his work on the development of hardy dwarf apple stocks, particularly the variety Clark's seedling. He also conducted research on raspberries, strawberries, hardy understock, junipers, and roses. Maney was a member of several scientific societies including Sigma Xi, the American Pomology Society, and the Iowa Rose Society. He was married to Lois Rath in 1922, and they had 3 children.
