Biographical History

The company, a woolen cloth and knitting mill in Campton, N.H., was established in 1826 by Erastus Dole. It remained under family management until it closed in 1961. By the 1880's, the company was producing cassimeres, tweeds, flannels, felt, and satinets. Around 1900, it began to manufacture finished knit goods, socks, sweaters, and pants. By 1920 knit goods and yarn were its only products. The Dole family also operated at various times a gristmill, a sawmill, a tavern and a store. They also had a power company, the Campton Electric Company, which sold power to the local community, 1898-1928, until its sale to the Public Service Corp. of New Hampshire; and a company, Sanborn and Dole, which sold harnesses, carriages and bicycles. Records of these enterprises are included in the collection.
