Biographical History

The Department of Housing and Home Management was formed when the Department of Housing and Design and the Department of Economics and Management of the Home were combined. Stephen Stanford (1960-1964) and Jenniev Poulson (1964-1970) served as chairmen.

The Department of Environmental Design was established in 1970 in the College of Family Living as part of a reorganization of the Department of Housing and and Home Management. Milo R. Baughman served as department chairman. In 1973 the department was renamed the Department of Interior Design.

The Department of Visual Arts was established as a part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications in 1996. Two previously existing departments, the Department of Art and the Department of Design, were merged to form the Department of Visual Arts. The Department Chairs have included Michael D. Day (1996-1998), Mark J. Johnson (1998-2004), John W. Telford (2004-2006), and Linda Sullivan (2006).

The Department of Interior Environment was formed in 1975 in a reorganization of the earlier Department of Interior Design. The unit was responsible for instructing students in the creation of interior home environments, and reported to the College of Family Living. Department chairs included Robert Edgar Dansie (1975-1978) and John W. Siperd (1978-1981). In 1981, the department was merged into the newly formed Department of Design.

The Department of Design was established in 1981 and was part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications. Previously the curriculum for design was in the Department of Art and Design and the Department of Interior Environment. In 1996 the department merged with the Department of Art to form the new Department of Visual Arts. Department Chairmen for Design included Michael C. Graves (1981-1982), W. Douglas Stout (1982-1987, 1989-1992), John W. Sipherd (1987-1989), and Robert T. Barrett (1992-1996).

The Department of Interior Design was formed in 1973 in a reorganization of the earlier Department of Environmental Design. The unit was responsible for instructing students in the creation of interior home environments, and reported to the College of Family Living. The department chair was Phyllis Allen. In 1975, the department was again renamed as the Department of Interior Environment.
