Biographical History

The Yale College dean's office was established during Timothy Dwight's presidency (1886-1899). The office was created in order to assist the president in his administrative duties, and to aid the faculty in social and disciplinary matters. The dean oversees the general course of study, administrative policies, and the operations of such programs as Directed Studies, Expository Writing, and Scholars of the House. The dean is also responsible for policies affecting campus life, student discipline, student organizations, and affairs concerning the masters of the residential colleges. The dean is the chief administrator of Yale College and oversees the Yale College faculty. The Yale College dean holds membership on the Executive Committee, the Course of Study Committee, most standing committees in Yale College, the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the Junior and Senior Faculty Appointments Committees.
