Biographical History

John L. Harris, a respected member of the civic and political life of the City of Hancock and in the mining industry of the Copper Country, was born in Eagle Harbor, Keweenaw County, Michigan, June 21, 1868. He was a member of the first class to enter the Michigan Mining School (now Michigan Technological University) in 1886, and was graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1888, and in 1916 was granted the Degree of Engineer of Mines as a recognition of his contributions to the mining industry. Mr. Harris was also a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As mining engineer for the Quincy Mining Company he became thoroughly acquainted with this property and in 1900 succeeded his father as superintendent, a position he held for three years. He resigned to become superintendent of the reorganized Hancock Mining Company, retiring after fifteen years of service with that company. Mr. Harris was for a number of years President of the Alumni Association of the Michigan College of Mines, a member of the County Board of Supervisors, and at the time of his death he was Chairman of the Hancock Republican Committee. His death on January 1, 1927, removed from the district one of its most useful and highly respected residents (excerpted from "Proceedings of the Lake Superior Mining Institute," 1929, v. XXVI).
