Biographical History
Born in Omaha, Nebraska on 11 May 1904. Died on 1 November 1995. Education: Armour Institute (now Illinois Institute of Technology) for two years (1921-1923). Transfers to the University of Nebraska and completes remaining undergraduate work in one year (1924). Attends the University of Michigan and works under Professor Walter L. Badger. Receives his master's degree and Ph. D. Employment: 1924 Cudahy Packing Company; 1927-1931 Eastman Company and Tennessee Eastman Corporation; 1931- Consulting chemical engineer; 1932- Polytechnic University, Chemical Engineering Department.
Othmer was born in Omaha, Nebraska on May 11, 1904. In 1927, he earned a Ph. D. in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan. In 1932, he began a career as a professor for the Chemical Engineering Department of Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, where he remained until his death in 1995. He also consulted for hundreds of companies on numerous chemical engineering issues. He received over 150 patents worldwide. He invented the Othmer Still, a basic laboratory device for the determination of vapor-liquid equilibrium data. He collaborated with Dr. Raymond Kirk to create the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology.
