Biographical History
John Lee Jones (1841 -1935) was born in St. Helens (Merseyside, England), the son of John Pidding Jones and Margaret Lee. After his parents were converted to Mormonism in 1846, Jones himself was baptized into the church in 1850. As emigrants from England, the family helped settle Iron County, Utah in 1852. Jones was ordained a deacon in 1859 and received his endowment in 1865. He served on several missions including one to England in 1879. Jones was a polygamist; his first wife was Rachel Simkins and his second wife was Betty Marsden Walker. The father of twenty-five children, he was arrested and found guilty of unlawful cohabitation in 1886. After serving six months in prison, Jones moved part of his family to Bunkerville, Nevada. The later years of his life were spent with family and in pursuit of genealogical research.
