Biographical History

Duncan Wright, his wife and three sons emigrated in 1815 from Scotland, where Duncan had been engaged in various branches of the textile industry. His son, Alexander, set up as a carpet weaver in Medway, Mass. in 1826 and subsequently sold the mill and machinery to the Lowell Manufacturing Company. In 1829, Alexander moved to Lowell, Mass. to work for the company and was employed as superintendent. Brothers John and Peter also appear to have moved from Newton, Mass. to Lowell to work for the company; the dye books are probably the work of one or both. The Lowell Manufacturing Company, founded in 1828, manufactured various goods including handwoven carpets until 1842, after which the Bigelow carpet (power) loom was employed.
