Biographical History
Missionary, Mormon Church; Tenney participated with the southern Utah militia against the Navajos, worked with Jacob Hamblin as missionary to the Hopi in 1858, and other mission assignments in northern New Mexico and Arizona. In 1882, he was jailed for practicing polygamy. He later served in 1887 on the Papago Indian Reservation in southern Arizona.
Ammon M. Tenney was born Nov. 16, 1844 in Lee County, Iowa. He moved to Utah in 1848, and then travelled on to California with his father who was called to San Bernardino. There Ammon learned Spanish. He was ordained an elder by Brigham Young. As an interpreter, he accompanied Jacob Hamblin and Major Wesley Powell into Arizona. In 1879 he was instrumental in purchasing land in St. Johns, Apache County, Arizona, for Mormom colonization. He died in Safford, Arizona on Oct. 28, 1925.
