Biographical History
Warren Taylor was born in Bedford County, Tennessee in 1903. He received the B.A. degree in 1924 and the M.A. degree in 1926 from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He served as Instructor at the University of Tennessee from 1926 to 1929 and in 1930 moved to the University of Chicago to undertake graduate work in English literature, receiving the Ph. D. degree in 1937. He came to Oberlin College as Instructor in the English Department in 1930, reaching the rank of Assistant Professor in 1941, Associate professor in 1947, and Professor in 1950. Taylor was one of the most popular lecturers at Oberlin, and many of his students went on to earn advanced degrees in literature. He was a prolific author of articles, talks, and addresses. His dissertation was published in 1937 by the University of Chicago under the title Tudor Figures of Rhetoric. Taylor retired from Oberlin in 1970 but continued to teach at Hiram College in Ohio until 1974. Taylor died in Oberlin in 1992.
