Biographical History

John H. Knowles, Chief Quartermaster, USN, was born in South Kingston, RI and died in Annapolis, MD in 1895. He was responsible for lashing Admiral David Farragut to the rigging of the USS Hartford at the Battle of Mobile Bay, August 5, 1864. He served for forty-five years in the Navy.
