Biographical History

In 1790, the State of Georgia gifted four land companies, including the Tennessee Company, with tracts of land that were officially Indian lands. The actions were overturned by President Washington. The main participants in the Tennessee Company were Zachariah Cox, Matthias Maher and John Sevier. The Company had already tried to put together a fort on the lands, near Muscle Shoals, Alabama, but had been driven off by the Indians.
